| 9:30 | Transition of a Device-Based Platform for DNA Vaccine Delivery into Clinical Testing As illustrated in numerous studies in animal models, DNA vaccines have tremendous potential for generating robust, broad immune responses against antigens relevant to a range of indications, including infectious diseases, autoimmune disorders, and cancer. However, in the clinical setting DNA vaccines have thus far failed to promote immune responses at a magnitude and consistency sufficient for commercial product development. One key factor contributing to these results is the relative inefficiency in the uptake of DNA vaccines into cells. In vivo electroporation greatly enhances DNA delivery into cells and can increase the potency of DNA vaccines by up to 1000-fold in animal models compared to conventional methods of administration. The development of electroporation technology wherein the means for DNA vaccine administration and electric field application are integrated into a single, fully automated administration device has supported transition from animal models of electroporation-based DNA vaccine delivery into human clinical trials. § Development of a clinical electroporation device§ Regulatory hurdles for a drug-device combination product§ Initiation of clinical trials§ Future prospects for electroporation-mediated delivery of DNA vaccines Claire Evans, PhD, Director of Protein Therapies, Ichor Medical Systems |
