Open to all developers and providers of portal, content and collaborative solutions.

As a provider of portal-related solutions, you are invited to submit an entry to the excellence awards. These awards recognize customer portal, content, and collaborative applications that provide significant and measurable business benefits, and that make innovative use of portal-related technologies. Awards will be presented in two categories:

Best Portal

This award will be given to the best portal. It can be an internal portal that supports business and IT users, and brings together business content, business applications, and business intelligence or an external facing portal that supports consumers, clients, suppliers and/or partners, and that enables information sharing and self-service.

Best Use of Social Technologies

This award category will be given to the best customer environment that demonstrates the use of social technologies including Web 2.0 development, integration, and information publishing technologies.

Solutions providers are permitted to enter and document one customer implementation in each category. Each solution submitted must be in production or at an advanced stage of testing. Applications in pre-deployment phase will not be considered. The customer documented in the submission must be available to the judges, and must be willing to be quoted in press releases and articles. Each submission must include a completed entry form signed by both the portal provider and its customer, and accompanying documentation that provides answers to the questions detailed in submission questions.

Submissions should be sent by email to Krista Vazquez at kvazquez@iirusa.com. Only submissions received by 5:00pm EST on October 3, 2008 will be considered by the judges. Submissions must not contain proprietary or confidential material. All submission material will become property of IIR.

The Judging Process

Judging will occur in two phases. During the first phase, the judges will be asked to score each submission. The three entries in each award category that achieve the highest score will become finalists. These finalists will be announced by October 17, 2008.

During the second phase, judges will select the winner in each category by reviewing the submissions from each finalist. During this process, the judges may contact the solution provider and/or customer for more detailed information. The winners will be announced November 10-13, 2008 at the Enterprise Web, Portals & Collaborative Technologies Conference in Las Vegas, NV. Both the winning customers and winning solution providers will receive an award at the event and be asked to present briefly on their solution. Finalists and winners will also be invited to present case studies at future IIR conferences.

Judges will consist of leading industry analysts, consultants, and editors. These judges will be looking for solutions that:

  • Offer significant and well documented business benefits and ROI

  • Have a well designed, flexible and scalable architecture

  • Make innovative use of technology

The three finalists in each category will be those solutions that gain the top three scores from the judges based on the following scoring scheme:

  • Business benefits and ROI (50 points)

  • Usability and application design (25 points)

  • Architecture and innovative use of technology (25 points)

Submission Questions

To enable judges to evaluate and compare submissions all solutions must be documented in terms of answers to the questions outlined below.  Total response should be 2-5 pages in length. Any submission that does not follow this structure will be disqualified. The more detailed information you can provide, the better the judges can evaluate the business and technical benefits of the solution. Submissions that only document or promote vendors products or services will be disqualified.

  1. Briefly describe the application.

  2. What business problem does the application solve? What are the business benefits and ROI of the application?

  3. Who are the principal users of the application? How many users currently employ the application? How will usage grow over the next twelve months?

  4. When was the application placed into production? How long did the application take to develop? Describe the staff and resources used to develop the solution.

  5. Describe the technology, architecture and infrastructure of the application solution.

  6. Describe any features of the application solution that are considered to be unique or innovative.
