The 12th Annual Money Market Expo set records with our highest attendance to date – and a schedule packed with information every professional in the industry needs to know from experts with remarkable insight. Led by conference chairmen Brian Reynolds of WJB Capital Group and Rich Rokus of M&I, MMX 2010 provided delegates with opportunities to learn new strategies, review regulatory issues, and network with key industry players.
The recently implemented changes to 2a-7 dominated the conversation, as regulators, portfolio managers, and ratings agencies highlighted portions of the new rules and contributed their perspective of the impact and consequences of each. Keynote speaker Burcu Duygan-Bump, Senior Financial Economist, Federal Reserve Bank, presented an evaluation of the AMLF, including past performance and what steps regulators are considering next. On the taxable side, there were in-depth panels that explored how funds can adapt to the new rules quickly and successfully, as well as a comprehensive discussion of the impact the new regulations will have on the industry. Tax-exempt fund experts discussed municipal bond regulations and how to evaluate risk-reward in the muni bond market in light of new rules. Dan McLaughlin, Chief Economist, Bank of Ireland, addressed the international response to the global economic crisis, and the strength of the current recovery.
General sessions drilled down on issues of the greatest concern to the industry. Moderator Paige Wilhelm of Federated Investors and a panel of key experts examined ways to sustain portfolios and deliver results to investors in the current environment. Risk assessment was the focus of a session led by Brian Kalish of AFP, who was joined by top executives from CITI, Dreyfus, J.P. Morgan, Fidelity, and Standard and Poor’s. Issuers Bob Dolecki of Fannie Mae and Rich Eisenberg of Farmer Mac joined City of San Francisco CIO Newlin Rankin to discuss short-term funding opportunities. Portfolio Managers from Pimco, Pioneer Investments, Oppenheimer Funds, and Fidelity Investments focused on attracting customers in a low rate environment. Chairman Brian Reynolds was joined by Brian Yeazel of Mason Street Advisors to close the conference by giving attendees practical tips on monitoring the market to identify opportunities for investments.
Corporate Treasurers were key participants in this year’s MMX. Jim Sumner of Pinnacol Insurance and Bruce Robertson of Westlake Chemical joined moderator James Vance of Western Southern Life to present case studies of their cash management strategies. A.J. Siccardi of Racetrac Petroleum led a roundtable discussion on investment issues.
