Getting Some Respect: How to Measure & Communicate Your EA Success

David Baker, Partner and Chief Architect, Diamond Management & Technology Consultants, Inc.

Michael Janiszewski, Manager, Diamond Management & Technology Consultants, Inc.

As organizations increasingly seek to establish a formal Enterprise Architecture (EA) function, they are finding that the size, scope, and underlying complexity of their efforts lead to significant challenges. Paramount among these is ensuring that the EA function is robust enough to mature with the organization and to deliver increasing value. An Enterprise Architecture metrics (e.g., metrics, measurement, and reporting) function is critical for addressing this challenge. It answers the critical question "What has EA done for the enterprise lately?", and keeps it answered across the entire IT Lifecycle. A robust function tracks the EA from business value delivered to the operational effectiveness of the EA group itself. This seminar is intended to provide the attendee with the real world tools required to develop and mature an Enterprise Architecture metrics program and to "get some respect" for the EA effort. The seminar will be taught through both lecture and in-class exercises leveraging real world case studies.

Key Issues
• The various categories of EA metrics and how they fit into the IT lifecycle
• The difference between EA and Program Management metrics
• How to establish your own EA metrics and reporting processes
• Who should be involved in the definition, gathering, and analysis of EA metrics (e.g., required skills, organization design)
• How to analyze your results and use them to improve your EA program
• Discussion of common EA metrics frameworks, deliverables and reporting templates
• Making EA metrics relevant by integrating the collection to provide actionable information throughout the IT lifecycle
• Discussion of training and change management issues associated with launching an EA metrics program
• Avoiding organizational pitfalls that may limit the effectiveness of your EA metrics program
